Drew is lead author of The BESS Book: A Cell to Grid Guide to Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage Systems, a leading industry handbook published in June 2024

Brandon Simons
Energy Storage Advisor
Brandon is an electrical engineer with a background in battery and mini grid research
and development. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology
and a master’s degree from Villanova University. His prior research in batteries at
ReJoule Inc. as a Senior Battery Applications Engineer encompassed second-life
electric vehicle batteries, navigating complex technical, regulatory, environmental, and
safety challenges to improve the battery circular economy and ensure battery energy
storage access to all. Simons has extensive BESS development hands-on experience
ranging from cell testing and characterization, EMS and fire safety system integration,
and EPC management.
Prior to joining PowerSwitch Brandon worked for NRECA International in Zambia
developing electric cooperatives through solar + battery mini grids and grid-extension
projects. He has extensive experience in the energy development sector working on
various endeavors in Southeast Asisa, the South Pacific, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Brandon is also a former E4C Fellow and Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, serving in
Zambia from 2018-2020 focusing on energy access, sustainable agriculture, and
appropriate technology.
